It’s alive! Buried deep in the Siberian permafrost scientists found a ‘giant virus’ that has been asleep for 30,000 years. Named Pithovirus sibericum, it contains 500 genes and was revived in the lab. The researchers are now trying to assess if ancient viruses such as this one could pose a threat for humans. via Science Alert/fb
Let’s hope this wasn’t the stupidest thing we’ve ever done.
there are about 16046540210 movies that explain exactly why this could be the stupidest thing we’ve ever done
Yay. Let’s play with it and see if it’ll kill us.
Am I the only one who thinks they went about this in the wrong order?
I’ve already reblogged this once. Please read the following:
Most of the time these sorts of viruses attacks amoebas exclusively. As the article mentions, there have been examples of this type of virus attacking humans, but there is only one known case. Giant viruses are not new though. They’ve known about them for about 10 years and this is certainly not the first one. My point is that sure there maybe something under the ice that is dangerous to life, but this probably isn’t it.
When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing. It’s many magnitudes larger than any other virus and can be seen with a normal light microscope. On top of that, it has survived in permafrost for 30K years! That’s incredible and I think we should be in awe of the diversity of things that have resulted from evolution. However, I think this alarmist fucking bullshit I’m reading is what holds back technology, genetics, and our general understanding of the universe.
